Once again, the local community turned out in great numbers to support the ever-popular Celebrity Football Match event, which this year took place on Saturday 11th July. Several well known stars from the hit Channel 4 soap, Hollyoaks, visited the faithful city to take on a team of local faces in order to raise money for Leukaemia CARE.
Eve Martin-Lewis, Fundraising Director, said, “We’re thrilled that the lads from Hollyoaks agreed to come back to take part; it is always a popular event and a great fundraiser for Leukaemia CARE”.
The Worcester All Stars team, put together by long-term Worcester City Football Club and Leukaemia CARE supporter Bob Marley, included several Worcester Warriors Academy players; Cyrille Regis – Ex West Brom Striker and England football star; Simon Archer – Olympic medallist Badminton 2004; Roger Narbett, head chef for the England football team local restaurateur; Gareth Hughes – ex Worcester Warriors; and Phil Newport – England and Worcestershire Cricketer. Ex-patient and charity supporter, Ian Micklewright also participated, as did the charity's Finance Assistant,
Lauren Billington, Corporate & Trust Fund Manager for Leukaemia CARE, said, “It’s a testament to Bob’s effort and to the pull of such a spectacular event that we’ve drawn personalities from the sport and business communities. The idea of including an ex-patient in the team was to remind everyone of the purpose of the day; to raise money for a hard working charity. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who took part, and who came along to support us”. The event was well received by all, with many supporters able to gain signatures and photographs with their favourite members of the Hollyoaks cast. The event raised over £5,000 for the charity, a magnificent contribution from a very fun day!
